Pneumonia Vaccine for Newborns: A Vaccine with Global Ramifications

Four thousand children die every day from pneumonia.  The bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae is responsible for most of these deaths.  Currently, vaccines are available in the United States and Western Europe that will protect against the disease; however this vaccine is prohibitively expensive for the developing world and does not protect those at greatest risk, namely newborns and infants. We are constructing a live attenuated vaccine against S. pneumoniae using modified Salmonella, to deliver streptococcus’ proteins, and thus prevent infection.
