Department Statement/Gen Info:
Our mission is to help build a sustainable world where every human can live a healthy and fulfilling life. This goal will build on current research efforts in medicine, psychology, economics and sociology and seek to define molecular, cellular and behavioral metrics of health and disease. Science must define the metrics and policy makers must implement them to insure that science and policy are optimized. Dr. Hartwell, Chief Scientist of the Center for Sustainable Health was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology in 2001 for his discoveries of a specific class of genes that control the cell cycle. His interests for the past several years have turned to how researchers can use the knowledge that has accumulated during the last 50 years in genetics and biochemistry to improve molecular diagnostics to benefit human health. By using powerful protein biomarkers, scientists hope to identify individuals at high risk for disease, detect cancer and other diseases at an early stage when they can be cured, and to provide improved prognostic information and better therapeutic response.
