Both an editorial and article in the April 26 science journal Nature focus on ASU’s progress in “executing an ambitious plan to replace the traditional model with one in which both influence and research excellence are concentrated not in departments, but in large, broadly based interdisciplinary centres with clear commercial or societal goals.” The Biodesign Institute is prominently featured, along with several other ASU research programs. The article indicates that ASU’s approach “…puts strong precedence on three things: high-quality, interdisciplinary research; access for large numbers of students from Phoenix’s racially and socially diverse population; and relevance to the needs of the city and the region.”
