Rachel Levinson, director of the Biodesign Institute's Government and Industry Liaison Office, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a prestigious international society. Levinson was selected for "distinguished contributions to the governance of science and technology through dedicated and informed public service, particularly in bioethics, biosecurity, and technology transfer."
Levinson, who began her career as a biologist before becoming a science policy advisor, recently joined the Institute to develop mutually-beneficial relationships between Biodesign Institute researchers and federal funding agencies as well as private sector entities. Prior to this, Levinson was with the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President of the United States, where, since 1993, she was assistant director of life sciences.
Becoming a Fellow is in recognition of efforts in advancing science or its applications that are scientifically or socially distinguished. In addition to Levinson, two ASU faculty members were also elected as fellows. Each Fellow will receive a certificate and rosette pin during the AAAS annual meeting, Feb. 16 - 20, in St. Louis. The new Fellows will be honored at a special forum Feb. 18.
