Dr. Chao received the PhD in mechanical engineering from the
University of Washington in 2002. After accomplishing the milestone
of the first nanoscale resolution magnetic resonant images for his PhD,
he expanded his research subject emphasis to lab-on-a-chip systems. His
main interests are advanced imaging technologies, bioinstrumentation, and
biomechatronic systems.Marine microbes are critical to carbon cycle and ecosystems. By using the developing in situ microscale biosensors, we gain the knowledge to reach global sustainability. In addition, using the new systems, new molecular tools can be developed through the understanding of the genomic behaviors of undersea microbial extremophiles. Such molecular tools can be used in drug discovery, synthetic biology, and fundamental life sciences.
