Dr. Nelson directs the Molecular Biosignatures Analysis Unit within the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, and also holds the positions of Research Professor in Biodesign and Affiliate Professor in the Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry.  Dr. Nelson’s research team strives to improve human health and contribute to the vision of personalized medicine by understanding protein differences involved in healthy versus ill individuals. It does this using novel proteomics and mass spectrometric technology and methods.  Dr. Nelson’s research is currently focused on cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Dr. Nelson has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts regarding biological mass spectrometry and proteomics, and is inventor or co-inventor on 25 issued and 20 pending patents covering mass spectrometric technologies and methods. Prior to coming to ASU, Dr. Nelson founded and, for ten years, served as President and CEO of Intrinsic Bioprobes, Inc., a company in Tempe, AZ that provides protein analysis services.

1986.: BS in Chemistry,  Eastern Oregon State College

1990, Ph.D. in Chemistry,  Arizona State University
